Earlier today near Lima, Peru

"Today we went for an extra ride before the start of the trip and the guys were amazed with this little ride hehe. Wait until they see what's to come! We are already having a lot of fun and drinking just a few beers. Looks like we are going to have a super trip!" Words from our guide extraordinaire, Wayo Stein, in an email that just came in a few hours ago.
A group of Canucks from Ottawa just arrived into Peru yesterday. With them is Ray Warner who heads up our Yukon Midnight Sun trip. Stay posted here for more updates on this trip!

Peru trip featured in UK mag

We're flattered here at Big Mountain, What Mountain Bike magazine from the UK just printed a 7-page feature on our Peru Incredible Andes all-mountain trip. We are pumped! "If you're after high adrenalin, high mountain riding with a colourful culture for a backdrop, then the Peruvian Andes are hard to beat," says journalist Jason Sumner. We could not have said it any better. This trip is seriously worldclass and a must for any mountain biker. Get some friends together and get in touch with us!

last week in Peru...

A group of friends went to Peru on a private trip last week. "The trip was fantastic. The guys enjoyed a lot the trip and we have just good memories," said head guide and mountain bike shinobe Wayo with a big smile from him home in Lima. Back at the office in Whistler and Vancouver we could not be happier. Thanks for joining us guys!
By the way, you have to come ride Peru with us soon...the riding is ridiculous, the culture unforgettable and being hosted by Wayo could not get any better. All-mountain or downhill?

This photo was taken on one of the many Inca trails that was built centuries ago. This one drops into the beautiful Sacred Valley.

rolling worldwide this week...

Hey, how's it going? Is the riding season winding down in your neck of the woods? Same here really. Whistler's getting cold and the snow line is creeping down the mountains and it's getting wet on Vancouver's North Shore. The Big Mountain office is pumping though...we've got groups off to Marrakech tomorrow on our Dirt Merchant XC trip, a private group later this week heading to Lima Peru on our Incredible Andes all-mountain trip, another private group off to Johannesburg on November 2 for our Rhythm of Africa Safari...and to Copper Canyon Mexico with Ride Guide TV soon after. Talk about some action! Want in? Give us a shout!

Did you know? These Moroccan goats climb Argan trees with incredible ease to eat the nuts which they then leave in their turds that the locals pick out to make oil that is expensive and supposedly makes your skin glow and make ladies look younger. It's true, Argan oil makes you beautiful.

Check out the June issue of Canada's Pedal Magazine for a great article on our Peru all-mountain trip, Unforgettable Andes, from journalist Jason Sumner. This trip is absolutely unreal. Trust us. We'll have our 2010 dates posted in the coming weeks.

Mountain bikers represent at the Tour de France

Victoria BC based former mountain biker Ryder Hesjedal is racing in the Tour this year on the Garmin-Slipstream team. Read about him on VeloNews. Of course Australia's Cadel Evans is a former mountain biker and a true contender this year!

For great online coverage, watch our friend Jason Sumner (who joined us in Peru in April on our Unforgettable Andes trip) on Velonews.tv.

Local Peruvians...

This little boy was SO happy it was contagious. Stoked! We drove up to a town at nearly 3500 meters and as soon as we stepped out of the van the whole town came out to greet us. We then climbed up past 4 g's - what a grind. Wow, talk about a fitness test. At the top though it was more than worth it...

This is yours truly with a 110 year-old woman who is 2 generations from the Incas. It was an honour to meet her and then ride the trails that her and her ancestors have been using for hundreds of years.

very big days

I could not muster up the energy to post anything yesterday. Up at 5am and back to the hotel at 8pm, shower, dinner, KO'd. What a day. After leaving Lima we drove up and up into the arid Andes for hours on a crazy road to around 12, 700 feet. This is as high as i've been. Fortunately we were heading downhill from there for 56 km. The trail was absolutely ridiculous - with several sections that were best evers in terms of pure riding pleasure, and each section distinctly different and the final pedal strokes to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. I will ride that trail again one day for sure.
Today we were up again at 5am and again we drove up and up on another head shaking road through some of the biggest mountains that I've ever seen to a town at 10,000 feet perched up on a dramatic mountain knoll. It was hot and sunny. From there we boarded small mountain horses while local boys pushed our bikes up (i know, i know...but they were making some money for their efforts) to a pre-Inca ruin and Moab-esque rocky plateau at 13,500 feet. My horse was fiesty and wanted to pin it up the mountain path which i did not like at all. But the rest of the group was in stiches as i went barreling past them. The descent today was much different than yesterday; the landscape was lush and the aspect that we descended was steep and extra large. The trail was also much more technical than yesterday, I was so happy to be on my 6-inch Trek Remedy 9 and Rock Shox Lyric fork - they saved my butt a few times. Today's ride and the whole day was truly epic. EPIC.
Tomorrow...up at 5am again and were off to the airport for the 1 hour flight to Cuzco which i'm really looking forward to. We're heading further into the big mountains...talk to you tomorrow if we have internet.

4000 feet in the can, 8000 feet to go...
