Trip Details

Mountain biking in Peru is a bucket-list adventure, combining challenging rides with rich cultural experiences, breathtaking historical sites, and exceptional hospitality. Your journey begins in Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, where Spanish colonial architecture and the impressive Plaza de Armas set the stage for your adventure. From there, you’ll explore the El Valle Sagrado (The Sacred Valley) over six days of riding on ancient Inca-built singletrack. These trails wind through remote traditional weaving villages, towering mountains, and lesser-known Inca ruins, such as the Huchuy Qosqo temple and the Moray archaeological site, offering a unique glimpse into Peru’s storied past. The shuttle-assisted rides feature exciting descents interspersed with short but challenging climbs at altitude, technical sections, and fast-paced stretches that make Peru’s mountain biking world-renowned. To top it all off, we’ve included a once-in-a-lifetime visit to Machu Picchu, accessed by a scenic train and followed by a privately guided tour of this iconic site.

Trip Itinerary

Mountain biking in Peru is a bucket-list adventure, combining jaw-dropping rides with rich cultural experiences, unique historical sites, and exceptional hospitality.

The below is a general outline. Distances and elevation are approximate and may vary. Big Mountain and Sweet Skills reserve the right to make alternations and substitutions to the itinerary as weather or terrain conditions dictate or as necessary to improve the trip quality or to accommodation the comfort, convenience, and well-being of our guests.

Day 1

Welcome to Cusco.

Arrive at your leisure and settle into our hotel located within walking distance to historic central Cusco. You have the day to recover from travels and explore this fascinating city. Meet up with others in your group for a casual (optional) dinner.

Day 2

Transfer to Sacred Valley & Warm Up Ride

Meet your guides, coach and the rest of the group in the morning ready with bags to transfer (45 mins) to Lamay Valley. We'll build bikes once we get to the lodge, enjoy a lunch and do an afternoon ride to loosen up, learn some skills, and get a feel for the terrain. Settle into the beautiful lodge, enjoying the spacious gardens with hammocks, friendly dogs, and enjoy the culinary delights that come out of the kitchen.

Day 3

Ride Lamay Trails.

A full day of riding is planned in the lush Lamay Valley. Starting high in the mountains in alpaca pasture lands, you’ll descend through the rocky Inca trails, alongside pastures, through creek crossings, rocky switchbacks, and our favourite: Peruvian flow! The day will be broken up with a delicious lunch at the lodge.

Day 4

Ride Lares Pass

One of the most scenic rides of the trip begins with a shuttle to Lares Pass at 4400m. The descent follows a mossy alpine trail through meadows and ancient Inca paths all the way to the town of Calca. We love it so much we do 2 laps on the upper part of the trail where we can practice the rocky terrain, switchbacks and enjoy the flow. Expect massive views, big smiles, and unforgettable terrain. We’ll have a well deserved lunch at the lodge then grab the shuttle for some shopping time at the quaint town of Pisac.

Day 5

Ride Moray Ruins & Salt Mines

This cultural ride begins just outside of Misminay, where fields and ancient trails lead to the impressive Inca site of Moray. The trail from there becomes more technical and exposed with unique features, seashell fossils and of course more amazing views! Our last trail takes us to another spectacular view above the Maras Salt Mines, in continuous use since pre-Inca times. We'll switchback our way down to have a chance to buy salt right from the source. Today's lunch is at a beautiful and private outdoor setting.

Day 6

Visit Machu Picchu.

Today is a well-deserved day off the bike. We'll start the morning with a transfer to Ollantaytambo, where you'll take a scenic 90-minute train ride to Aguas Calientes. From there, a 20-minute bus ride will deliver us to Machu Picchu for a privately guided walking tour. After the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to further explore this historic area.

Day 7

Ride The Other Side & Chinchero

A lesser-known gem in the Sacred Valley, the Other Side and Chinchero offer jaw-dropping views and big descents. We'll be putting our skills to use today navigating technical features, steeper lines and exposed sections. Today is an adrenaline-filled pure DH experience! Great photo ops guaranteed.

Day 8

Ride Patacancha Valley to Pumamarca.

One of the most scenic and meaningful rides of the trip. From a remote mountain pass at 4350m, you'll descend through the Patacancha Valley. This ride will have the most pedalling of the trip as we contour the mountainsides weaving between potato patches and alpaca and lama pastures. We'll arrive in the traditional village of Huilloc. Here, we'll be treated to a family-made traditional lunch in their home, giving us a glimpse into rural Peruvian life. The final descent to Ollantaytambo is absolutely stunning with views above the terraces as afternoon light glimmers on the farmlands below. It’s pizza night at the lodge! In their wood fired outdoor pizza oven, along with a pisco sour, this is a fantastic way to celebrate the last night of the trip!

Day 9

Final Ride & Transfer to Cusco. Adios!

After breakfast, we'll enjoy one last ride in Lamay, most likely repeating our favourite trail from the top! We'll do a quick lunch and a bike tear down and be in the shuttle by 3pm to head back to Cusco. You'll be dropped off at your chosen hotel or at the airport if your flight is 7pm or later.
